Caring for Your Sheep & Alpaca Wool Pieces
Natural fibres like alpaca and sheep’s wool are beautiful, breathable, and long-lasting — but they do require gentle care. With the right approach, your garments and accessories will remain soft, luxurious, and durable for many years.
1. Spot Cleaning
For small marks or spills, always try spot cleaning before committing to a full wash.
-
Gently dab (never rub) the area with a clean cloth dipped in cool water.
-
If needed, use a drop of mild wool detergent diluted in water.
-
Blot until clean, then press with a dry towel to absorb excess moisture.
-
Lay flat in the shade to air-dry.
2. Auslüften (Air Refreshing)
One of the joys of wool is that it naturally resists odours. Instead of frequent washing, simply auslüften:
-
Hang your garment outdoors in fresh air (away from direct sun).
-
A few hours of airing will freshen fibres, restore loft, and prolong the life of your piece.
3. Avoid Overwashing
Wool fibres are self-cleaning, meaning they rarely need to be washed as often as cotton or synthetics. Overwashing can weaken fibres and cause unnecessary pilling or shrinkage. Wash only when truly needed.
4. Hand Washing Instructions
When a wash is required:
-
Fill a clean basin with cool or lukewarm water.
-
Add a small amount of wool-specific detergent (see recommendations below).
-
Submerge your item and gently press the water through the fabric — avoid rubbing, twisting, or wringing.
-
Let soak for 5–10 minutes, then rinse in clean cool water until detergent is gone.
-
Press gently to remove excess water (never wring).
-
Lay flat on a clean towel, roll to absorb moisture, then reshape and dry flat on a rack or towel away from sunlight or heat.
5. Managing Shedding & Pilling
It’s natural for fine fibres like alpaca to shed slightly, especially in the early wears.
-
Use a soft lint brush or a sweater comb to gently remove loose fibres.
-
Avoid wearing wool pieces under rough outer layers to reduce friction.
-
Over time, shedding reduces and the fibres settle beautifully.
For small pills (tiny fibre balls), gently remove with a cashmere comb or depilling tool — never pull by hand.
6. Luxury Wool Detergents (Available in Australia)
Using the right detergent is essential to protect delicate fibres. Look for pH-neutral, enzyme-free formulas made specifically for wool. Some excellent options in Australia include:
-
The Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo (widely available online and at premium boutiques)
-
Soak Wash (Celebration or Lacey scents) — rinse-free, gentle on fibres
-
Ecostore Wool & Delicates — New Zealand brand, eco-friendly and readily available in supermarkets
-
Merino Wash by Cuddly Sensitive — gentle option for everyday woollens
7. Storage
-
Store wool pieces folded, never hung, to avoid stretching.
-
Keep in a breathable cotton bag or drawer, not plastic.
-
For seasonal storage, add natural moth deterrents such as cedar blocks or lavender sachets.
